Graham Watts about The Tempest

24.06.2015

Izadora Weiss’s exhilarating and always absorbing new production of The Tempest is a masterpiece of dance theatre; remaining faithful to Shakespeare’s story while also reinvigorating the wonder of his narrative, quoting Graham Watts.

Izadora Weiss’s exhilarating and always absorbing new production of The Tempest is a masterpiece of dance theatre; remaining faithful to Shakespeare’s story while also reinvigorating the wonder of his narrative.

Izadora Weiss recreates the magic of Shakespeare’s theatrical illusion in her skilfully constructed, danced adaptation of The Tempest.

She succeeds where many other choreographers have failed. Where they have been shipwrecked on the rocks of The Tempest’s complexity, Weiss has navigated the narrative with such skill as to have distilled the essence of Shakespeare’s last play into 80 minutes of complete clarity.  It is achieved with such simplicity as to be barely credible.

The choice of Mahler’s first symphony – augmented by the famous adagio from his fifth symphony – is inspirational and serves the tempestuous storyline with a faithful authenticity,  by providing descriptive themes for Prospero, Ariel, Miranda and others and luscious melodies for the key dance events.

The whole cast are outstanding in bringing to life the characters of the Tempest. Filip Michalak gives such a towering performance as Prospero that one could easily imagine that he has the power to whip up a storm.

The remarkable simplicity of set design is offset by astonishingly effective lighting (also designed by Weiss).

Weiss has the alchemist’s ability to structure her work effectively, with impressive beginnings that draw the audience in, and memorable endings that stay implanted on our collective consciousness.
She always leaves us wanting more.

The Tempest - review by Jann Parry

11.06.2015

Weiss is taking Baltic Dance Theatre on a journey that needs to be seen outside as well as inside Poland, quoting Jann Parry from DanceTabs.com.

Though the conclusion relies on Mahler’s adagio to deliver the emotional resolution of the work, it is an effective epilogue. Weiss has conveyed her own understanding of Shakespeare’s last play, in which he may have identified himself with Prospero, asking for redemption. She has given her company a range of well-developed roles, creating a distinctive movement style for her main characters and, especially, the female ensemble of nymphs who carry the first part of the production. Tura Gomez Coll is outstanding as Ariel, a fascinating combination of feminine and boyish attributes in her assertive way of dancing. She is entirely persuasive as a mischievous sprite and as a Leonardo angel in touch with another world. (...) Weiss is taking Baltic Dance Theatre on a journey that needs to be seen outside as well as inside Poland.

New review by Graham Watts

(...) it is clear that the pupil is now herself becoming a master. Weiss’s bold and imaginative choreography has already established her unique brand of dance theatre through a collection of excellent works that deserve a world audience of their own.
